Six-page typewritten sketch by Frederick Young as dictated to Martin Manley ca. 1910 in which Young describes his youth, the advent of the Civil War and his role in it, and his marriage and life after the war. Young served in the 5th Battery of the Wisconsin Light Artillery from 1862 to 1865 and the bulk of the sketch describes this period including training at Camp Utley (Racine, Wis.), battles in which he was involved, his reenlistment under General Sherman and the March to the Sea, and his being mustered out on June 6, 1865. The sketch concludes with a description of his life after the war including his marriage, children, and different occupations in which he was engaged.
